The Focke-Wulf Fw 56 Stösser was a single-engine advanced trainer. The aircraft was powered by an Argus As 10C V-8 air-cooled inline engine and was intended as a single-seat advanced trainer for budding novice pilots who were to graduate from the Bucher primary trainer. In Germany, the Fw 56 was used to demonstrate and evaluate the dive bombing technique, which was more effective than conventional bombing at the time and contributed to the purchase of dedicated dive bombers such as the Junkers Ju 87 Stuka .
